RISS, A RED BULL DOCUMENTARY:

  • Bring the Director's vision to life

  • Ensure each animation style is cohesive throughout the film

We’d be lying if we said we didn’t do a giant ‘fist-pump’ in the air after we got the call from the talented Peter Hamblin over at Hamblin Imagery to work with him on his latest documentary, RISS - a film following Carissa Moore, a world-class female surfer, in the year leading up to her famous world surfing championship victory.

Showcased on Red Bull TV, LK Motion worked directly with Hamblin on a series of animations for this beautifully shot film against non-negotiable timeframes. Challenge accepted.

Peter has an unmistakable vision and style and it was vitally important to us to deliver on it with the animations. The key idea was a collage of scrapbook-style animations blended with smooth animation and camera work. The scrapbook and smooth style don’t traditionally combine together but once again, applying our expertise, we were able to develop a stunning end-product that captured the overall essence of the documentary.

You want to know exactly how we did it? Ok. Using After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator, we used a blend of 2.5D Camera work, rotoscoping, typography and particle animations to create the final segments. We were supplied most of the footage and files, but our next step was prepping all the footage. This included going through different images, vector files and pdfs and cutting out what was needed to fit the creative.

After each segment was created, the editors got to work incorporating the files into the final version. As the project evolved and began breathing a life of its own, each scene was meticulously crafted to the last and you can view the final film above or on Red Bull TV.
